Overflow has air in it?

My overflow seems to have air in it. the drop into the sump is pulsing and making a slurping noise all of a sudden. What the heck can be causing this? I have a Rio 3100 powering the tank on the other end of the sump but its about 4 years old and Ive never done anything to it. I was thinking about replacing it being that Ive noticed a decrease in water flow. Could this have something to do with the slurping?

Bubbles accumulate in the top of U tube overflows due to insufficient flow.
Since you talked about having less flow, I'd say you've found your own cause. Slurping in a drain line usually is caused by a belly in the line, or an airflow problem where the line is not allowed to "breathe" properly. Since it came up along with your flow problems, fix that, and see if it goes away.
You've not cleaned out your pump in 4 years? You can replace it if you want (Rio isn't that great anyway), but you might try dismantling it and giving it a complete cleaning. You can soak the pump parts in either a decently concentrated mixture of CLR or a well diluted mix of muriatic acid, to get all that crud off of the parts. This is the easiest way, that stuff can be nearly impossible to remove by hand scrubbing, plus hand scrubbing tends to break delicate impellers, etc.
I actually prefer to use muriatic acid. Although it's more dangerous to work with, it's actually safer for the tank. Should trace amounts get into the tank, it's not going to hurt anything, but I have no idea what's in CLR that could cause harm. Once done soaking in muriatic acid, simply hold the parts under a running sink, then put them into a container of water and baking soda for a few minutes, which will neutralize any traces of acid.

could be that. Sometimes my overflow/sump gets air bubbles in it. The sound makes me nuts! I normally turn everything off for a little bit and then start it back up, seems to do the trick. If you suspect that your pump is going bad, I'd replace it before it dies altogether though.

Can he use straight vinegar? I think that is somthing else I read you can soak pump parts in. A 24 hour soak and a tooth brush to clean with the next day. Run the parts under water and then dunk in Ro water if your worried about it.
Oh, A slime coating will build in your drain pipes. They should be cleaned as well. If you are experiencing a flushing effect, I would look at cleaning those. As mentioned, the drain can't breath so it goes in and out of a siphon. Just another thing to check.

Straight vinegar should work, just a bit slower.
I actually got the muratic acid idea from Doug at Deltec as his recommendation for cleaning my skimmer. I couldn't believe I was hearing it, but boy does that stuff work well, and it's a heckuv a lot cheaper than CLR.

I just ordered 2 Koralia 3s for my 65. I'm also going to just change the pump for a Rio Hyperflow instead of taking it apart and what not. Anybody have one? I'm more than likely going to stay within the Rio brand as my 3100 has ben excellent thus far. Thanks for the cleaning tips tho....
