Overflow

I set my 15 g sump up w/ mag 9.5 and lifereef overflow this weekend. I killed power to see if the overflow would break its siphon and it didn't work - damn near flooded the house. Am I doing something wrong? I'm really not sure if water was returning from the pump to the sump. Maybe a check valve?

If you have the option drilling two small holes (Mine are smaller than 1/4" more like 1/8 or maybe a little smaller. A 1/4 and youll get decent waterflow out of it) instead of one on opposite sides of the return. Its amazing how a snail or crab can be perfectly over the hole as the elctricity goes out
