Overflows

Hey all I'm researching on how to setup my tank and I came across a question. There are 2 built-in overflows in the tank....one on each side. I know that one of them is used to deliver the water to the sump, but what is the other overflow for? Does it serve as the area where the water is delivered back to the tank or does it also serve as taking water to the sump??

in your overflows are there two holes drilled in each one, or one hole drilled in each one?
If there is one hole in each overflow then you can do it a couple of ways, you can have dual overflows where both pull water out of the tank into the sump then your return would come up over the back of the tank.
Or you could have one side be the overflow and one side be the return.
If you have two holes in each overflow then you would have a overflow and return in each side.

Ahh I got ya...thanks Birdy!! Each overflow has two holes at the bottom. Due to that, I'm thinking I'll have a return and an overflow on each side so I can have more current.

Now I'm REALLY confused about the loops!
:notsure:
Birdy, if one of the holes is for the overflow and one for the return, wouldn't the return just be filling up the overflow and then draw it to the sump?
Sorry, I know I'm just not getting it. I'm new... :joy:
BTW Birdy, thanx for your info. I'm learning alot from your experience.

Okay, the water goes into the overflow there is a pipe that goes into the holes, one of these takes the water down to the sump, there is a return pump in the sump, the return pump sends the water back up a pipe that goes up and out of the overflow return hole into the tank. I hope that makes more sense. :)

Ahhhh...
So the return line would have to be plumbed back up through the hole with the pipe continuing up and back out of the TOP of the overflow into the tank....
NOW I SEE! Sorry for the dumb questions.
