The best thing I found when I moved from Arkansas, was I took a cooler and went to the local Really large Store and bought a battery powered airpump that is used for keeping minnows in a portable live well. I moved my entire tank fish, live rock and all from Arkansas to Georgia, it took 48hrs and I didnt lose a single thing!
This is just a sugestion

well, one is because i will be moving sometime soon...and th eother reason is because i'm trying to find out for my girlfriend whether or not it is possible to keep a fish inside a bowl/vase(2-3gallons) without having to use an airpump...she was hoping to use it as a centerpiece for a dinner party that could take anywhere from 3-4hrs...and so i told her i would find out...i know its risky...but it would be amazing to be able to have a saltwater centerpiece...then be able to just take those fish and put them back in the aquarium....everything is figured out, besides the fact that i dont know if there is a way to keep them alive for that long without at least an air pump. thanks

I would not do this with a saltwater fish. It can be done (and is commonly done) with goldfish and bettas which can tolerate these conditions easily.
What sort of fish were you planning on using?

Sounds kinda mean to me, I wouldn't like to be put in a glass box and set in the middle of a bunch of giants while they make loud noises and eat. I was also under the impression that you don't really want bubbles making contact with your fish, it damages their slime coat which is their first defense against parasites.
Tell her no.

haha, well how is that any meaner that putting them in a normal tank for people to stare at them at tap the tank?? lol...i dont know what kind of fish she wanted...not bettas or goldfish, either just basic damsels, or any tropical fish...and i just didnt know if it was possible...if it were tropical, would one be able to add a plant to the bowl to keep oxygen in the water? thanks

In the scenario you provide you are depriving them of oxygen, circulation and temperature control...not to mention potential ammonia build up or whatever...and that is very different from being in a main tank.
It might work. I guess you could try the tablet thing. Who knows? Personally, I wouldn't want to try it and waste the money or fish. It sounds cool but not if you are eating at the table watching fish gasping at the surface of the water, lying on the bottom, or chasing each other around. And I would be annoyed if my host did something of the sort just for a centerpiece. But that's just me. A lot of people wouldn't be bothered by it at all. Anything for entertainment or a "look."
IMO, you might be able to get away with it with some freshwater fish (definitely could do a betta or goldfish without problem at all) but I wouldn't do damsels or saltwater fish. In the set up I've seen, nice shells were glued together to make a "center" of the bowl and some sort of area in the center could contain flower stems. So you had shells and things, flowers, and a goldfish or betta. A lot of people wouldn't know a saltwater fish from a goldfish anyway.
As for the plant, considering the probable number of fish using the oxygen versus the output of the plant (combined with diffusion rate through water) its role would be minimal.

Well nothing we can say will change your mind if thats really what you want to do. It's a shame she won't use a beta, they are a very sturdy species and a good habitat is the exact thing you want to use as the center piece.
I don't let people tap my glass, and the fish in my main tank have plenty of places to hide if they get scared. If I put them in a bowl, or now what I think about it, when I transported them from the pet shop to my tank they were in a large plastic clear bag similar to a bowl like environment. They were not very happy at all, frequently racing around the sides of the bag and desperatly looking for a way out.
And as ophiura mentioned.. I'd be very turned off by watching something desperatly look for shelter or oxygen while I was trying to eat. If it was a formal dinner with clients I'd try to stay proper, is it was a friendly gathering I'd let them have a piece of my mind.
I hope you change her mind, good luck.

lol, well i dont let people tap on my 75 either, but in fish stores they arent all so watched over to make sure, but anyways...i dont think she'll be using saltwater...or well, not that i can tell, maybe tropical...depends on whether these oxygen stones really work or not. If so then she may have her answer...we'll see i guess, who knows.

I use bag buddies but only when shipping fish they work good (for shipping) after a few hours the water turns blue. Also they have stress reducers a calmers in them that make the fish less active i would not use one in a display on a table, again the tabs fizz and the water turns blue would not look that great anyway.

bronco,
the people involved in this forum are here to help those that lack exp. and help
to provide the best enviroment possible for fish inverts etc, and not experiments to provive entertaiment for a few hours in the middle of a table.
im very sorry if this sounds bad, but to me that is a cruel act!

rick, so wouldnt it make you glad that i'm getting advice BEFORE i do experiments on a damselfish??? and most of the fish everyone buys is for "entertainment", whether in an aquarium,or a fish taken out of the aquarium, into a bowl for a couple hours, then back to the regular aquarium...i know its a little difference, and i dont want to argue, i'm just stating my opinion....so i think it would be better if i ask for advice instead of trying it out, killing several fish on different methods, THEN asking...now i know it most likely wouldnt work on a damsel...thanks, and i appreciate your concern, have a nice week.

I agree. There is a right way to do the wrong thing.
(doesn't make it any less wrong, though.)

hi bronco, but to me asking a question on putting a fish in a centre piece in the first place is not a hobbiest question! why stress a fish in the first place for? (removing them from their original reef is bad enough) they dont need remainders.
have a nice party luke. :happyfish (rick)

people have bettas in a large vase with a certain kind of plant on top so that the bettas eat the roots it looks nice and would make a pretty centerpiece the plants have a white flower
