Neither are truly nessesary, if both are not set up correctly then both could be usless, The UV has to be set up so that when the water passes through it has to be suspended enough to that the light can so called sterilize the water. If the ozonizer isn't set up right it can KILL YOUR FISH!. Now if you truly have bad water or heavy bioloads or even corals that could kill each other even though they are on opposite sides of the tank with the chemicals that they give off then you would want the ozonizer. IMO you must use an ORP monitor and controller that will enable you to turn the ozonizer on or off depending on what you have your ORP set at, which is usually somewhere between 350 and 400. An ozonizer works well with say the Berlin Classic that you can inject it right into the skimmer HOWEVER after injection it MUST be run through fresh carbon so that any leftover 03's can be nuetralized before return to the main tank. If you know your tank and you know how to use the ORP monitor then one look in the morning or when ever you pass your tank at that monitor could tell you if something is wrong even if you don't see it right away. You never want ozone in your main tank as you can kill everything off pretty easy. But for clean water the ozonizer will beat the snot out of any UV.
Since I purchased one I had to study up on them recently
