The easiest way to get and keep pH at the proper range is:
Routine water changes.
Properly aerating your tank.

This is not always true due to the factor of if you have a winter season from where you are from, and there is not much fresh air circulation due to trying to keep the cold out. I saw a study done somewhere on it and aierating your water will not help due to the air quiality in your house.

If the air quality is suffering that bad in a house I'd be afraid to go to sleep... I can't imagine oxygen dropping enough in a room to affect our tanks while not affecting us?

Its common chemistry during winter months there is lees oxygen produce due to the lack of photosysnetis and thus the cause of poor air quilty. the human body is able to adapt to it seeing we only need a small precent to live, but as to a system that is setup to mimic a natural warmer area where oxygen content is much more stable. thus it will have effect on thing that are very dependent on it.
