Painted my Tank

I've been against it from the start, but after fussing with those plastic backgrounds for years I did it. I took advantage of the fact that I'm moving, and have to empty my tank to spray paint the back of it black. I must say I can't see doing it any other way. They tank looks awesome. I highly recommend it.

I recently got back into this hobby after about a 13 year absence. I used to try poster board, that over price backing they sell at the LFS, and it always looked like crap with dried saft after about 2 weeks. When I bought my recent tank, the LFS suggested spray painting the back of the tank. I was skeptical, but I gave it a try. It looks great!!!!! I suggested this to anyone with a new glass tank (just be sure you like the color because you are stuck with it!!!!!).

Its actually not at permanent as you think. I tried it on a 10 gal before I did it on my 55gal. You can actually take a clean new razor blade and scrape off most of the paint and then take paint thinner to remove the rest. I used rustolem glossy black enamel paint. its really hard to scratch. I tried scratching it with a number of items and the only thing that could scratch it was a razorblade.I don't have any pics yet but I'll get some up soon.

I have always been against painting.. No particular reason. Now I do not have a problem with it. But... I have seen them need re-painting after a couple of years. Still better than those ugly backgrounds.

I painted mine with spray paint. It's light blue at the top (about 4") fading to dark blue. I thought about when I went snorkeling in the philipines. it looks pretty natural and hides all the junk in the rear.

Both of my tanks are painted. My wife painted them years ago. They look like backgrounds with the designs on them but it's paint. And yes it does look good!

Painting is the only way to go. I found that black looks more natural, and brings out the color of the fish and the rock. Do not worry about it being permanent. You can easily take it off with a razor blade and It looks good as new.

I think I'll probably paint my tanks background on. Black would be best,,, but my sand is black,, and I don't want it to look like a cave or something,, and ideas on what I should do? Anyone else w/ black sand have any decorating ideas?

There is this stuff you can get at a place that sells acrylic. They call it foam but it's really hard and about 1/4" thick. I put it on the back and used packing tape to tape it along the top and back. It's held up for a number of years, doesn't curl, tear, etc. You can also get it made out of acrylic and tape it on too. My is blue. Easy to change if I get tired of the color.
