painting stand

I am going to be painting my stand black over the weekend and was wondering waht the best way to do this is. I bought the stand at a LFS and it is currently a oak color. Should I sand the stand then paint it or just paint over the oak color? I have some Behr black paint that is a Satin finish. Will this be fine or should I use a different finish?

you should sand before paint let dry check for spots , paint should be fine mmine took couple coats

You may also think about using a coat of primer, like Kilz....Good luck!

Def need to sand or use some sort of primer. If the old stand has any sort of clear coat on it im sure its a polyurathane. A water based paint that you mentioned will not stick well to it. Sand that off first or use an oil based primer then paint on top of that.

I painted my stand with behr after using kilz primer which was recommended by bojik and acrylic51 but on pine which was not painted. I would definately sand a painted stand first.
