im looking for small fish for my 40 gallon reef. I was thinking a pair of neon gobies or a pair of purple firefish. I have heard not to mix these in a small tank unless they are a mated pair. But i havent been able to find a mated pair anywhere. If i get them small enough, will they pair up like false percs?

I have two purple firefish. Truly beautiful fish! They're in a smaller tank and are doing fine, considering they aren't a "mated pair." IMO, go with two purple firefish. They are much more showy and colorful fish than neon gobies!

i like them both. I was thinking having two of one and one of the other. i would just love to see a ton of little 2 inch gobies darting in and out of my live rock.

I have 2 purple firefish also and I have to say they are pretty awesome looking. As far as the mated pair thing goes...I think it's bull. I bought 1 3 weeks ago and I added the other last week and they do everything together.

yeah, i knwo they dont have to be a mated pair and are mostly peaveful fish. But i wanted a mated pair to try to raise them. I would do clowns, but in this tank, there is already a moroon clown. And not only are they a hard clown to pair, but mine isnt big enough yet to try to pair him.

I've been wanting a pair of neon gobies for a while now.. they got some for $6 a piece at my lfs right now.. but I hate the idea of paying $6 for something I can barely see :p

I have read somewhere that they have spawned successfully in PVC, but don't remember where (I know thats not to helpful
). My purples (which I added at different times) have been together for about six months now and they hang out together all the time but I'm not sure if they are a mated pair now? I haven't ever seen signs of spawning.
I would go with the firefish, JMO :happyfish :happyfish

i do like the firefish. but since they are known jumpers.... im not too sure. i do have an eggcrate top, but i dont want to lessen the amount of light i have either for my clam and few SPS.
maybe even bangais. They are pretty cool looking, and the babies are much larger too. Big enough to eat baby brine. :notsure:
