if the clownfish has been alone for a long time, it is already a female. try to get another of the same size and they will work things out.

I have a female which is larger than the male, but if they are mating, it must be a freaky ritual, b/c it seems like she's rules the roost. He's like a wet puppy staying out of her way at all cost.

I would not get one of the same size...I've always been told to get either a smaller one or larger one. If yours is already pretty big, get a smaller one since your larger one is probably already a female.
I had a smaller gold stripe and got a larger maroon (about 1 inch difference) and put them both in my larger tank at the same time and I was lucky since they seem to have paired up.
I'd be careful with adding any new maroon to your tank if your current one is already established...they can be very territorial even to other maroons! You might want to try changing the rock and stuff around a bit so it isn't so territorial with a new one.
Good luck! Hopefully you'll get lucky like I did and they will pair up.

Always get a smaller clown when adding a second one . Your maroon might not accept the newcomer as maroons are very territorial . I would change the rockwork/decorations around before adding the new clown .

This is my own question but also very relevent to jp. How old, or more directly, how big should they be before they will be able to mate?
