I really want one of these guys I think they are stunning, but I have a couple questions. How big of a tank do they need? What do they eat? Are they hardy? Im just trying to get some info on them before I make an impulse buy which I know is not a good idea. Thanks in advance

They get BIG! Like 2 feet long.
They also get ugly. They lose the white coloring, and turn an ugly spotted brown color. I'm pretty sure they won the 'cutest juvi to ugliest adult' thread not long ago.
And they're predators. They'll eat anything they can get their mouth around.

Yeah, very ugly fish when full grown, and very BIG. Have you looked at marine betta's? They are a good looking fish, and stay under the 10" mark. The panther is a great looking juvi, but just do a search and I am sure you can find out what the adult version looks like.

panther groupers make good candidates for aggressive tanks with larger fish or fish they have the means to defend themselves such as puffers lions etc...they do grow somewhat rapidly but can be housed for a few yrs in a tank such as a 125 but in the long run much larger tank is best suitable for them due to the ave size as adults.. to me i think they are beautiful fish bu they will eat what ever they can get their lips around.... unfortuneatly i dont have alot of my pics on the pc now sinse it crashed 2 yrs ago but these pics are of my older fish these are all show sized fish in a 125 panther was aprox 13 inches lion was 12in, scat 10in lunar wrasse 8in

My wife wanted me to get one too. She saw one at the LFS that was about 2 inches long. We went to the Long Beach Aquarium in CA a couple of days later and I pointed out a full grown one that was about 2 feet long with a mouth the size of my fist. All of a sudden she agreed that maybe that wasn't the fish for our tank.

I dont think panther groupers or porc puffers get 'ugly' when they get big, they just get big and not as 'cute' as they are when they are tiny. I like both of them as adults. its personal preferance, but most people dont have tanks to keep fish like these as adults.
