Bought a panther grouper 5 days ago and it will not eat flake food or frozen brine shrimp. is there any reason why, or what can i do to help him eat.

alright obviously you didn't read up on this guy before you bought him. these guys will not eat flake or brineshrimp. you have to feed him either live food that has been fed flake such as mollys and platy's, or krill...something that is MEATY. you may have to start off with a live molly or platy that is small enough...you could even try guppies if he is smaller to start him to eat...i guarantee if he doesn't go right for the live food there is something wrong with your grouper. good luck

Another problem I see coming is that you have a panther grouper in your 45g tank. The grouper will soon outgrow your 45 gallon tank up to a lenght of 20". Any small fish you have in the tank can become it's meal sooner or later.

The Panther I used to have ate Mysis shrimp. You may want to give that a try just to get him to eat something. They LOVE live food.

How old is your tank? What are the specific water parameters, especially ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH and specific gravity? Other fish in the tank?
IMO, no feeder fish long term :nope: but just to get them interested, but not as a long term diet. This is not healthy for them, and it is unecessarily expensive too...not to mention, have you taken a close look at the health of feeder fish?
1) I would take the panther back now...if the store will take them. A wonderful ploy the panther grouper is...small and cute...but grow fast and become very difficult to trade in at larger sizes. You can not put any other small fish in with it, BTW, and it will quickly outgrow that tank.
2) Was it eating at the store?
3) Try ghost shrimp aka paleo shrimp...for now to see if it will be interested. Also try krill, shrimp, squid and silversides (frozen)...definitely not a flake eater.

if you just got it return it because there is probably something wrong with it then. i have never came into contact with a panther grouper that did not go after live foods right away especially if it has had at least a days worth of acclimating. i work at a pet store and we get these groupers in a lot...not because we order them but because they are sent to us on accident..i don't like to carry these guys even though they are very cool because of the size they get. out of all the panther groupers that we have recieved over the years the only time they declined live foods is when they were sick and died few days later. these guys should go after live food such as small fish right away... tell the lfs that it is not eating at all

i also forgot to add along with ophiura even in a small tank something like the size of a 10 gallon they grow quickly. these guys grow really quick. probably one of the fastest growing i've had in my store.

the biggest problem i hear is it grows REALY fast, in one year you could have a 6 inch panther on your hands when u bought him as a small 1 inch. TAKE HIM BACK
