Ok i have finished my canopy (looks nice) and mounted my 32 watt smartlamp in it. I have nothing in my five gallon right now besides sand and water. It is cycled. Do i need to start cycling the lights, like starting out a few hours a day and gradually increasing till about 10hrs even though i have nothing in there?
Another question, most say that lights should be on about 10 hrs a day, should this closely match regular daylight times or can it be any 10 hours throughout the day as long as it is on a schedule. Thanks.

If you run the lights for a full 10 hours you can get an algea bloom.
depends on how light dark the rest of your room gets. If it is mostly dark during the day then you can set hte light cycle as you please. If the room gets a full load of normal daily light then the light cycle should match close to what hte room gets ..... several people run their light cycle later in the day so they can see their tanks when they are home ...
