People who live near ocean Stupid Question?

I was wondering. Are people who live near the ocean, able to just walk out and gather whatever wildlife they want from the ocean and deposit them into their aquarium? And sea water, no need for artificial salt? Is this common?

I wouldnt take any water from the shoreline. All the pollutents in the ocean get washed ashore. I tried this back in HS and had no luck.... Live rock is illegal to take from anywhere... If your going to collect fish, you cant just walk in the ocean catch them.... You will need to dive/snorkel off a pier or off rock formations... most reefs are protected, so you would have to find if it was legal to collect there or not.

I live on a saltwater canal and i used to put all kinds of criters from the canal in it. I even started getting stuff from the beach. The nitrate would get pretty high. After i saw a reef tank and marine tropical fish.....i completely changed. The canal stuff was cheap.
