peppermint shrimp propogation

In my 54g reef, I wish to generate larval food from a "harem" of lysmata wurdemani.
Does anybody have experience to share doing this? How many shrimp should I try?

I have had many shrimp "have babies" but they all get eaten up by the fish... I see it as the circle of life.... and free fish food too (haha)
