Does anyone run mechanical filtration periodically
on a berlin reef system to remove free floating
particles? If so, what do you use?

I don't use mechanical filtration at all. Purely EcoSystem method. Just my personal preference...

I run a "modified berlin system"...sump/skimmer/DSB/LR...and about every 2-3 weeks I run some carbon and phosphate sponge to help polish up the water a bit. The carbon/phosphate is basically the only "mechanical" filtration I use and I only run it for 24-48 hours about once every 2-3 weeks.

My water is crystal clear with out any mech filtering. I lightly vacuum a little of my sand (actually I stir a small area up, and vacuum they cloud that arises.)
I use polyfilters once a month for a day or 2 to ensure removal of "crud" (i.e., heavy metals, excess bioload, etc.) a good prophylactic, IMHO.
