how is it that the pet stores fish survive when they go through basically zero acclimation period besides floating the bag?

My guess is they have their tank water set to match that of the wholesaler. A lot of them run at low salinity. All the fish I get from Live aquaria come in at around 1.020. They come directly from the wholesaler (quality Marine I think). Just a guess but it's how I'd do it.

Huh yeah it just amazes me that any survive and makes me think that it's not all that important...which I of course drip all of my fish :)

My new Mandy I just got came in with 1.015 I dripped for about 2 hours until it finally came up to .025...after I did it I regretted not just making the QT .015 and then every day add a little more :(

Yeah. I wouldn't bring up salinity that fast. I'd have done it over a couple days. much easier to adjust the QT.
I usually only fill my QTs half way then I can dilute to match.

I've ordered fish from a lfs. A kole tang. I took it in the shipment bag. Water tested at 1.016.

Yeah I feel kind of bad but I guess u live and learn

You would not be impressed by their loss rate.
I suppose they don't give a crap all they gotta do is have it survive until it gets to your house

Even we lose fish. So the volume fish stores do , it makes sense they will have dead loss. However alot of us have also figured out just bc a lfs does it, doesn't mean we should.
