When I go into the LFS, I like to wear my cloak of invisability...
So They Don't See Me Coming ...:hilarious

My gf and I just went to one where the attendant tried to sell me everything I asked about. Pretty much all he said was "Oh yeah, thats what you need. You want that." when asking advice on different things. No explainations on why I want/need the particular item in question. No other information otherwise. It honestly sounded like he didnt know jack about anything except that he wanted to make a sale.
They were closing in 30 mins so his co-worker was doing some vaccuming and stuff. I guess we were in his way and was very rude about it. I guess he didnt care that his buddy was trying to sell us something. Let alone that we were interested in stuff.
Lots of other subtle things about the store that gave me a bad feeling about them. But the 2 mentioned above just ruined any business I was going to do with them (potentially buying a canister filter). Too bad.

The wife of my LFS owner, who loved to brag about her tank, and give me all kinds of advice (when I didn't know any better), didn't know what a Peppermint Shrimp was.
"Also"....The owner of the LFS telling me that a cleaner shrimp would die if it didn't have any fish to clean. Thank goodness at that point I knew better.....and said..."oooookkkaaaayyyyyy"!...................Bye-bye....:D

I went into a LFS about a month ago and overheard a conversation between the owner and a new hobbyist. The guy said that he just set his tank up the day before, added water, and was ready to buy some coral. The owner started showing him some without ever warning that they would die because the tank had yet to cycle and the guy was using the flourescent bulb that came with the hood. I couldn't stand it so asked the guy if the tank had cycled, because it not all the coral would die. The owner, politely, tried to shut me up, but the guy told me to mind my own business. My wife and I left and have never been back. I do wonder if that idiot is still out there being a serial coral killer, though.
There is a good LFS in the area. My concern for him is it looks like he's struggling. He won't sell to anyone if it could harm the livestock or is overkill. Unfortunately all the idiots have to do is go down two exits and they can kill whatever they want. SAD.

I'm sure not all LFS are bad. One in my area, will stand there and answer questions no matter how long it takes. He'll ask questions about your set up before he sells you an item. He'll even admit that he doesnt know much about saltwater fish, and he'll refer you to another person in that same store. But then, there's the other side to this guy. I bought my setup from a guy who had been open for about 3 months. I waited until the price was right, and I bought the tank, the stand, and the canopy. I told him I allready had the lights, so he dropped the price a bit lower. I took it home, let it sit for another month before I had the time to set it up....I actually did the leak test. Once I was satisfied that it passed..I went back to the store, only to see "Store for Rent" in the window. I was shocked, but not surprised. Every time I went in, to look at his SWF, he kept telling me, he was having a hard time cycling the tanks. He finally tried with Mollys. I didnt think he was going to make it there. Aside from Fish products he had small animal stuff.
But, i"m glad my equipment held together.....You just have to watch out......Last saturday, I went to a not so local supplier....I bought my Hummu, Hummu, and a Maculosous angel....I was looking to get one of the Magna Floats. Of course he handed me the largest one, without asking what size tank I have. I checked out the Price...$30....I carefully read the description...It was for Acrylic tanks.....I told him I had a glass tank, then he grabbed the same size one, but in a different package....it was $4 cheaper....Big woop! I think from now on I'll be buying my dry stuff online. Everything in stores gets so marked up....It has to. But I dont want to pay for it.

I have a 46 gal bowfront that my lfs told me would be fine for fresh or saltwater.
i'm learning now, 2 months from purchase, that i can't hook up a protein skimmer, sump or halide lighting due to the way the hood is set up.
It's set up for freshwater, and there's not much i can do about it.
since then, they've sold me a linkia star that died today, and a coral that's not doing very well.
I've learned some valuable lessons from this website.

Hi all. I love the site.
I am still looking for "THEE" tank. I noticed there were some mid-westerners around and was wondering if someone could direct me to a NON-horror inducing LFS in the Cincy/N KY area.
Many sleepless nights of very informative surfing here, thanks.

I am just down Hamilton in Northside. I think I know the one you mean. In the heart of Mt. Healthy, right? I grew up near there. Do you consider them honest?
Sorry if this is hijacking, just seemed topical. Also not trying to make too big of waves just yet, i'm new ;)
