i know hard wood works in fresh water, so mabye if you float a piece of hard wood in your sump after you treat it i think that should work

First... what are you testing with and what is your alkalinity & calcium levels?? Second... 8.6 isn't terrible. When are you testing and getting the 8.6 reading??
Don't do anything drastic... water changes never hurt but there is no need for drastic actions yet.
