pH and light

It is my first time here, I got 2 questions:
1. Do I need to care about the "pH" of the salt water?
2. Is the light a must for salt water fish tank?

Hi:
All i can say is please buy a book, and read up on caring for saltwater fish.
You need to understand all of the basics before you dive in here.
1)-yes...absolutely
2)-depends on what your planning on keeping. Just fish-> lighting is unimportant, corals-> lighting is crtical
