pH question

I would not try to lower your PH unless it is around 10. Anything under 10 will not hurt anything. Raising PH is very difficult and and an ongoing problem for many, just be happy that you have high PH.

Did i miss something? its ok to have your PH at 10?!?! umm normal sea water it like 8.2-8.4 the fish and inverts we house in our aquariums are used to a stable environment that has no to litle change at all. For the best health and continued success of your aquarium I would strongly suggest that the PH be maintained as close to sea water as what you can atain.

I didn't say it was ok to have PH of 10. I said if it is 10 then you should worry about lowering it. I said anything under 10 and I wouldn't worry about it. The animals we have can live just fine in a PH of 9 or even a little higher. Just like temp, anything from 77-86 is fine, we just need it to be stable. If you have a stable PH of 9.2, I wouldn't sweat it. Nothing will be harmed from it, but if you keep lowering it and it keeps going back up, that is bad. But when you start adding calcium, it's prob going to drop on it's own anyway. I have never seen water stay at a high PH for any period of time.

Where did you read that a pH of 9.2 would not be cause for alarm ?
A pH of 9.2 is TEN times higher than a pH of 8.2
It's not linear like temperature.
cjr579,
True you can add a substance that contains an acid to lower the pH of saltwater .. but normally this is not so wise to do.
pH is a measurment of the concentration of H+ hydrogen ions ( protons ).
Most all acids contain Hydrogen ions, and will give them up when mixed with water that contains other ions as well.
There are better ways to lower the pH of saltwater - but first it's best to start at the beginning and see what caused it to be high in the first place.
Most good synthetic saltmixes mixed with close to neutral freshwater normally mix between 8.0 to 8.3
Not all - but most
Is your pH high ?
If so ... what does it read ?
Or are you just curious ???
