Phenoms and Tommy John

The Washington Nationals say star rookie Stephen Strasburg has a "significant tear" in his elbow ligament and probably will have Tommy John surgery.
General manager Mike Rizzo said Friday that an enhanced MRI taken a day earlier revealed the extent of the injury to the right elbow.
The 22-year-old right-hander will travel to the West Coast for a second opinion. But Rizzo says he anticipates Strasburg will require surgery, ruling him out for 12 to 18 months.
The news brings an abrupt halt to Strasburg's promising first season. He struck out 14 batters in his major league debut in June. Strasburg is 5-3 with a 2.91 ERA and 92 strikeouts

in 68 innings..

The overhand motion used to deliver the ball is the most unnatural movement for the arm and shoulder. Did you ever see freeze frames of a pitcher's delivery? The arm and shoulder is all contorted! I'm actually surprised this doesn't happen more.

Let's just hope Tommy John surgery has progressed through the years.

Poor mechanics, thats all there is to it. That's why guys like Nolan Ryan, Greg Maddox, and Roger Clemons were good for so long (yes the roids didn't hurt for Clemons), they threw the ball with their whole body, guys like Strasburg, Lincecome (Big Time Timmy Jim), Kerry Wood, and Pedro (for example) put a lot of strain on their arms, it gets them injured eventually.

Well, Pedro did last quite a while. Tim Lincecum has been majorly injured? I'm starting to develop a hairbrained theory that Ice is a contributing factor. I mean Page never iced his arm. He took a scalding shower 15 minutes before he went out to pitch. And he pitched into his 60's...

Pedro hasn't won 10 games since he was 33 years old, his arm has been toast for a while, he can't break 90 anymore....Lincecome is a future injury waiting to happen is why I used him as an example.

well personally, I think Pedro made it ok... He's been pitching since the early 90's... He pitched 10-12 years before any major health problems. I guess I haven't sat down and watch Timmy. I always get mad and turn him off.

I dunno, it worked out pretty damn good for TJ. If it progressed much the guy would come off the surgery throwing faster than before

I don't know if Pedro is HOF worthy or not with 219 wins, but he had as good a stuff as anyone ever, he just didn't last long...Fernando Valenzuela is another great example, nasty nasty stuff, funky motion, short injury plaged career.

Oh, and as far as Sachel Page (sp?), Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton would have hit about .650 if they got to bat against Page when he was over 40.

I was still a fan when Fernando mania struck. THat guy was fun to watch pitch. Not as much as Robowski (SP?)

I knew someone that had a relative in the Dodgers scouting organization who referred to him as Montezuma's revenge. He said just wait, we have this pudgy Mexican who doesn't speak the language and will turn baseball on it's head.

Well in my opinion the fact that he could even grip a ball after pitching every day of his life at 40 should be tribute to something... Whether it was good mechanics, or he had some secret to bouncing back...
