Recentely I posted a thread here that questioned the use of zeolite to reduce phosphate in marine aquariums. I bought a tub which claimed that it was safe for them, but I wanted a second opinion. Also I was curious if this was just another snake oil type of fix.
Having gotten no definitive answer, I decided to use the "scientific method"
10 days ago, I secured three tupperware containers.
In each one I place 1.5 cups of water.
One was held as a control. The phosphate count was 2ppm the test kit used is a Salifert
Into one was placed .75 cup of zeolite granules
into the second was placed 1.5 cup zeolite granules. (I forgot to rinse the granules when I did this one so zeolite mud was introduced)
After 24hrs, the .75 cup container was tested and the resulting color was compared to the color of the "control" It was definitely lighter.
today, (10days later), the results were again compared.
control= 2ppm
.75 container 1ppm
1.5 container .5ppm
the containers were left still for the ten days, not shaken or agitated.
This test was to test for the effectiveness of Zeolite in reducing phosphates in marine water. No other tests were conducted to determine the absorbtion of trace elements, minerals, or leaching of anything .
Just thought I'd pass along this info.
