Photo Tip Needed

What is the secret to taking the great photos that I always see from the rest of you? The only setting my camera has (without flash) is an outdoor setting. It just doesn't take as clearly as the ones I am seeing.

check if you have a macro setting on your camera. it will help you focus better. the button may have a flower or something on it. make sure you are zoomed all the way out becasue it is hard for a camera to focus on something close when zoomed in
what kind of camera do you have? can you give an example of a picture so we can better diagnose the problem?

I've got a Nikon that is about 4 years old. I'll look for a macor setting. Thanks.
I'll post some photos but it will have to be Monday (left the download cable at work).
