This is nothing new. This has been going on for a few years with freshwater parrotfish, tinfoil barbs, albino oscars and just recently, some live bearers. Before that, people painted fish such as skirt tetras and glass tetras (and still do).
It is just awful that anyone would think this is okay. From the article:
"My hope is if it gets more people into the hobby it's a good thing. If a kid comes in and sees a fish with a heart on it and says I want a fish tank and learns how to care for it, I think it's a win," says Lane.
Some people are sick. Any responsible parent would tell their child that tatooing or painting a fish is wrong. Two fish, the glass and skirt tetra, are extremely hardy fish, but once painted, they develop ich and lymph in no time. The survival rate for them is minimal.

Yeah, I don't see anyway to take into account a fish's "feelings" (whatever you want to call them, they have nerve endings) and say that that is okay. It gives me the creeps. Tattoos are for people who choose to have them, not animals who don't know what is being done to them.

people at my lfs tattoo fish... they have some for different occasions, hearts for valentines day, red white and blue stripes for 4th of july... they don't tattoo them though, they inject dye into them in the shape they want.
