these were taken when i went int oa very famous chain with about 600 stores in the states, when i informed the manager that they should not keep a 7" yellow tang in a 10 g allon tank with a 5"niger trigger they laughed at me and said what do i know...when i told them that their "purple tang" which is now more like a grey tang its so sick with hlle and bacterial infections etc...i feel so bad was in a 10 gallon tank with a blue hippo tiny that was also suffering from hlle...and looked terrible.. they said they are fine i told them they are going to die unless u treat them now.. and they said thank you please leave. below are the pictures i took. i also showed them what a healthy blue hippo and purple tang should look like. they laughed and said leave.
i left.
the yellow tang was healthy but in a 10 gallon with a 5" niger for ho long i should have bought him and put him in my office 210....they were selling it for $30..and the "purple tang " was $150...2.5 inches. lol

Quit shopping there. Chains will always be that way but you do not have to support them.

That's why I try to avoid those stores as much as possible...whenever I go in there I feel compelled to buy some fish just so that they can have better living conditions...I haven't done it (especially since I don't have a tank big enough to house most of those fish), but I do think about it and definitely think about buying a huge tank just so that they can have another shot at life.
BUT THEN...the thought enters my mind...that if I buy: #1 a New big tank and all the equipment I need for it...#2 Fish in need of rescuing, then the net result would be like running in place because I would be giving them my money/business and therefore encourage them to continue their "business" practices the same way
.
So +1 to LSU's post...let's not support those stores...and while that may result in some of these fish not making it, in the long run we would be taking a more effective approach at encouraging responsible husbandry of sealife and supply for the hobby.

That yellow tang doesn't look bad, but that purple tang looks like he's beyond hope of recovering. Plus 150$ for a tiny diseased fish?!

It is normal for a stressed out purple tang to lose its color. I'm not suggesting that this is fine, or even that I would buy from them. But a purple tang is one of the few fish that you can easily tell how happy it is by its color. They generally look this way after shipping. Mine did. Now it is a dark purple with even darker markings.

yes and it ends with a "D" the yellow tang for $45 7" is a great deal if you have a large tank....they housed him with a niger triggerfish 5 " in a 10 gallon...

Wait it ends with a D? The one I'm thinking of starts with a P and ends with a T.
Purple tangs are gorgeous.

if the mods allow i can say the name of the chain but its not hard to figure out 2 words first word starts with a "p" and ends with a "d" and the second word starts with a "d" and ends with a "s"..they have stores in every state...with the purple tang in the 10 gallon was...some kind of large angel fish a 2 inch blue hippo tang with severe hlle and bacterial infection and had no color...and some other fish...they threw me out of the store when i told them politely that i think that there fish is overpriced and very ill and needs to be treated asap..they said what do i know.. i showed them my pics of my fish and i said this is what i know ...and they said ok please leave.

I went to one of those chain stores (begins with a P) a couple of years ago and the SW tanks were filthy, water was cloudy, the fish were really sick looking with a couple of dead ones in one tank. I was disgusted and when the manager responded that our SW fish guy is off for a couple of days and that's why they look that way, I just walked out. Sent an email to corporate and they responded about a month later, thanking me for my concern and saying they would "investigate" the situation.
Aside from being cruel to the fish, it just doesn't make sense from a retailing standpoint. Some stores just don't seem to understand that there is competition in the sale of every single consumer item and people vote with their wallets. They will blow off a few disappointed consumers, those who even care enough to report issues with products for sale, but it's the people who just shop somewhere else and spread the word about poor service that will kill a retailer.
I had a very minor issue recently when shopping at Nordstrom-emailed corporate that night, and got 2 phone calls from department managers in less than 24 hrs, and a personal follow up email from the store manager 2 days later, checking up to see if my concerns had been addressed. They want my business and they know that I can shop elsewhere.
