Pipefish Questions

Just some general questions that I couldnt find answers to while reading other articles, that Im sure are easy for most pipefish-ers to answer.
Need to be fed like 4 times a day like Seahorses?
How big of a tank, just a general range?
Common care issues?
Will most eat frozen mysis, or does it need to be a lucky one? And will that be enough to sustain them for their life?
Thank you. Thinking about buying a tank for the downstairs, and something this exotic would be awesome.

i love my pipe fish i feed mine 2 to 3 times a day. i have a 55 gallon tank but i also have 4 seahorses and a dragon gobie and 8 different shrimp. as for care issues i think or i have found they are like seahorses if you get one get one thats is already eating frozen, hopefully mysis shrimp, if not they will cahnge from frozen brine to shrimp but use vitamins with what ever it eats. i have heard they all wont eat frozen, that is why you need to see it eat at the store. hth

Ok. So do you think one pipefish would be ok in a 24 gallon? Just generally speaking, and I havent quite checked out species yet. More curious if there is a species or two thats common and will fit in there. Either pipefish or mantis shrimp :].
Ill try to get em to feed it at the store before I bought one then. Anyone else who can share their thoughts on pipefish?

I have my pipefish with my dwarf sh's.....they eat frozen and live twice a day
They are lil pigs

I did lose one, Im not sure if he jumped of if my kitty went fishing but I just found him all dried up the other day

B4 i got these pipes, I got one from a LFS and it refused to eat period and sadly died of staration I am sure

I thought all pipefish is fairly difficult to keep and require what is marked as *expert level* user. I'd love to have a few, but I'm by no means anywhere near an expert fish keeper.
How much SW experience do you who have pipefish have? Do you have them in species only tanks or with seahorses?

I have been doing the saltwater thing for about 8 years in which I have had sh's on and off......I currently have a tank set up just for the dwarf seahorses and pipefish!
Like I said in my pp....this is the 1st time I have had any sucess with them....my other attempts ended sadly

I hear ya! From what I read, seahorses are not a beginner item either. I'll put those on my list 5 yrs from now :)

with my 1st pipefish, he refused to eat so he starved himself ans when the LFS got in replacements for me, they both died within 24hrs of arriving there and never even made it into my tank

This time so far so good except for the one that jumped

i believe my janss's was wild caught cause thats all my LFS could find, and he has done great. i think it's mostly because he eats mostly pods (but sometimes small bits of mysis). this is another thing that makes me think live foods, and not just dead food with supplements floating around or sitting in a bowl, would probably be better for horses and pipes..
i personally think pipefish are easier then seahorses just because they don't require hitching posts and are stronger swimmers.

ok the pipe died and fast im wondering if i may have done something or had something on my hands that bothered it and not the horses, he has lived through the death of all the early horse deaths, i had him for 3 months, no visible signs of anything sucks!!!!!!!!
if we werent in the mist of a winter storm i would go get more water and do a water change to be safe, 12-14 inches of snow, but we are and i'm not.....
