Has anyone had any experiance with pipefish?? Will they be ok with clownfish?? in a reef
I want to start a 10g Reef with pipefish and two False Percs.
What are the conditions of pipefish?? such as food, parameters, and tank mates??
Does this sound like it could work??

pipefish need excellent water quality! And i herd that they are hard to care for. YOU MUST HAVE LIVE FOOD FOR IT

Sorry it took so long to respond, been pretty busy.
I have heard some Pipefish are easier then others. I was looking at the candystripe pipefish. I was thinking get a pair of those and see how it goes after that was looking at a pair of ghost pipefish or a pair of banded pipefish.
Can you mix pipefish with other kind of it's species??
I know they eat live brine shrimp and I am going to buy a continuos hatch-n-feed from a web site That is constantly hatching brine shrimp from their eggs.
Is that all pipefish eat??
Do they need any special things in the tank like gorgornians or do they need lots of rock work.??
also would two clownfish be ok as tank mates??
What about current do they need lot's of it?? I am assumming since they are slow swimmers and docile they don't need much.
also what about intakes?? like HOB filter, or powerheads?? How do I close them off??
Vince.
P.S. Sorry for all the questions LOL

HI,
I kept pipefish with my seahorses for years. They can be bought already eating frozen mysis. The current would be the same as with SH also, not too much but enough in the tank to keep a consant flow to prevent dead spots.
they are cool fish.. goos luck. and when buying one, ASK what they are being fed FIRST!

You can mix species but in a 10 gal I would only put the pipefish in. You wouldn't want to be battling nitrates with pipefish in there. If so make sure you get one of the species that stay farely small like the Janss', Multibanded, or Banded Pipefish. I had 3 banded pipefish in my 10gal but after about a month they showed signs of ich(or something similar) and they all died in 2 days. They also do need to be fed more often than most other reef fish. If you can get a pair of mated Janss' I would go that route. Good luck.

What I was thinking.
Is to have a 10g reef with two pairs of pipe fish in there. I was looking at the candy stripe for one pair and not sure on the other yet.
i know they are low flow animals so I was thinking x2 Minijet 404's which put out about 106gph. Does this sound like two much? You think it would be better to get a stronger pump and build a Spray bar for it??
Also what about intakes. What is the best way to cover all these up? Can pipefish and seahorses be kept together??
Last Question. I was looking at a continuos hatch-n-feed. I put the brine shrimp eggs in and they hatch with in like 5 days. My questions is (A) can I use this to feed my fish with. (B) Can I keep brine shrimp alive in an aquarium for a duration of time? Lets say 2 weeks?
Sorry for all the questions again.

Vince,
As in my previous post.. If you missed it, YES you can keep seahorses with them, they are a great tank mate as they are sumwhat from the same speciel or family. Thast what I did. I also had a bi-color blennie in there.
If your tank is 10, just make adjustments with the PH's. If the two are too much then go with one. YOu should always have a backup anyway. Spraybars ar a good idea for surface movement but they dont do much for "whole tank" water movement IMO. Oh, and they intakes should be covered with either a sponge or i used to use media netting (little white meshy sacks with a tie) THATS A DEFINITE! But keep them clean or they will clog easily. One suggestion would be to shut off the PH when you feed, then the food wont get stuck to the intakes. =) The reason I say this is.... the food gets sucked onto the intakes and stays there a while and then when you shut them off to serivce your tank, all the old corroded food falls off and gets in your tank.. UGH!!! experience, experience..
As far as the Brine shrimp. They will hatch in 1 or 2 days with tank water, there are 2 ways to do this. First, if you need them quick for some reason, you can float a TANK water filled plastic bag in your tank and they will hatch pretty quickly but obviously be pretty small. YOu can keep them in small plastic tub or coke bottle with aeration, here they will grow and maybe last a week at most. I will say from experience, hatching the brine for my seahorse fry is a serious pain in the

[hr]
but if you stay on top of it, it can be done. SO good luck with that!

Also, really do searches online for your pipefish, you can buy pipefish already eating FROZEN MYSIS, which is THE WAY TO GO!! Just like anything in this hobby, DONT RUSH IT.... The great thing about this is the other inhabitants will eat the mysis as well, even your inverts if you plan on them, less waste/less nitrates.. :cheer:
Oh, and BTW, if you plan on buying the hatcheries.. they are cheap so buy two, no matter how well your doing at the hatching, ONE ALWAYS FAILS at one time! UGH!!
Sorry to be repetative, but the questions were asked.. :D

If you e-mail me, I can help you out with a great hatchery.. and SH's already eating frozen mysis.
"Your endless life-time supply of artemia in your own breeding vessel..you will never have to buy brine shrimp again"
With proper care your culture will produce for several years! XXXXX cultures are already going for over 5 years..producing artemia every day! Truly Amazing!!
Cant post sites here,,,, But you e-mail me privately.. Cavimom@aol.com, use subject line "SeaHorses " =)

no they cannot be with clownfish!!! the only reason they can be with seahorses is because yes they are from the same family. if u feed them frozen food they will not thrive. live brine is ur best guess. and back to the clownfish, the clowns will eat all the food. read about them almost anywhere and it says they are slow eaters and therefore cannot be mixed with many things. mandarins, on the other hand, will eat the same thing as seahorses and pipefish and will not bother them. clownfish will slowly but surely pick on the seahorses and pipefish. im not even sure if a 10 gallon is big enough for a pipefish.they get to be from about 4 or 5" to 7". it would be for seahorses and a mandarin though.
please dont put a seahorse even near a clownfish. they are already endangered. (at the beginning it wont seem like the clown is picking on the horse, but the horse wont be getting enough food. later u will notice the picking)
heres a link for a seahorse and pipefish, its hard to find seahorses now
