Hi, I dont think there is anyone keeping dwarf pipes right now. I do know they have pretty much the same requirements as dwarf seahorses. Newly hatched bbs several times a day. Any filter would have to have a fine sponge filter so they dont get sucked up and lots of macro algeas or sea grasses to hunt pods and hide in.

I kept dwarf pugnose pipes until last summer. Had quite a few broods of fry. As Teresa mentioned, their care requirements are the same as dwarf seahorses. Feeding 2/3 times per day of newly hatched brine or enriched day old brine. None ever took to frozen foods - so don't try, it will do nothing but cloud/deteriorate the water quality in such a small tank.
My tank was planted heavily with caulerpa prolifera, which was easier to care for (and less demanding IMO) than most of the sea grasses. Filter intakes must be covered and flow can't be TOO harsh.

No offense, if your LFS says they have dwarf pipes which are at MOST 3" long nose to tip of tail AND they are eating mysis shrimp, I would have to see it myself.
The snouts/mouths of dwarf pipes are no larger than dwarf seahorses. If indeed they are dwarf (and not just juvenile pipes of other species) and you see them eat mysis with your own yes, then there is no reason you couldn't feed them the same thing.

ok call me stupid lol but the tank wasnt labled dwarf pipefish or anything els for that matter so i just assumed that they where dwarf pipefish lol stupid me lol so will it still work?

YES!!! dwarf pipefish are awsome and can range in color anywhere from brown to bright orange! i have a male and a female with my dwarf seahorses, u can se my pics by going to my thread " dwarf seahorse help" srry but i couldnt get them onto this forum my computer is kinda messed up lol but ya they feed the bbs that i feed my dwarfs and besides that dont really need that much special care in my opinion

O thats awesome, what size of tank are yours in. also i am new to pipefish and any helpful info you can give me would be great. thanx

mine are in a ten gallon i have a male and a female right now and are hoping they will breed in spring:party
i just have some macro algae in there and feed em 2 times a day the setup doesnt have to be as big as mine though, u can keep them even in a two gallon

if your tank is only 5.5g then i would stick to freshwater and keep dwarf freshwater puffers. they are a cute smart mini puffer.
unless you want to breed baby brine shrimp on a daily basis i would not bother with dwarf pipefish or seahorse.
if you want to have a saltwater tank for pipefish or seahorse then get at least 30g tank with a protein skimmer and live rock.

u dont need a 30 for dwarf seahorses and pipes pete159, dwarf pipes only reach 3 inches and dwarf seahorses only reach about 1 and a half inches so all u really need is a 5.5

the purpose of a larger tank is better water quality and roaming range. Not necessarily that that it's because they don't get any bigger.

Thanx for your comments/warnings,but my lfs has about three pipefish in a 2.5 gallon, with like 2 or 3 sexy shrimp. i called and asked them what a proper simple system for pipefish was and they said a 5.5 would be great, with a bubble filter and small protein skimmer and small heater would also be great. And their pipefish look GREAT

Maybe not frozen, but one of my 2 mth old ponies managed to snick in a live mysis I got for them as treats. I thought he was gonna choke...Little guy managed to snick it down though!

I would not get a pipefish they need little lighting, little flow, they have to be in an established tank, your tank is to small ,also if you want seahorses they are really hard to keep. ''sorry''
