Plankton is grown to a high density. While you can visually see a bottle or vat turning green, you have to observe phytoplankton under a microscope to determine the species.
Fish dont directly eat phytoplankton, thats why we have fish foods. Phytoplankton stimulates the growth of zooplankton, which can be a number of microscopic animalistic organisms that both fish and corals feed on.
I hope that answers your question.

Just adding a note...you can grow your own, just Google for the "How to" Also Google where to get the beginner culture. I think it's done with a large soda bottle with an air line, but it's been a while.
Look up "Indo- Pacific sea farms"...those guys actually sell the starter culture. I can't link the site for you, because it isn't allowed to link other competitors sites.
I'm not concerned with giving you the place to look for, because all of the ads on this site are competitors.
I don't get it... but they do use the ads.

Thanks. also, in dr foster and smith they sell visible planktons. Go check it out.
I'm not sure what you buy from a fish store could be used to grow more...I think the stuff they sell is already dead. To grow your own, you need a live culture to get started.
