planning on a ray

possibly within a week i plan to have a small california/round ray, u hear they eat shrimp, but what about crabs? the tank is almost 90% beach, and i have a quarter sized porcelain crab and a large adult decorator spider, and 2 very large turbo snails(larger than a golf ball) will he eat/mess with them?
in the tank is also a lionfish and small eel, but im not worried that he will eat them, just the critters, the urchin should be fine as it normally stays up on the glass or in a corner behind a filter intake
thanks for the input, first time owning a ray and i dont want stuff to end up missing, if it will eat them, ill just move them to another tank

lol i knew that was coming, i only asked about the ray eating the critters though, they have very few places to hide

currently the tank is a 55gal, but within a few months, im upgrading to a 256 gal which i then have to cycle, so make 3-4 months in the tank
sand substrate

im not worried at all about the fish, and ive read quite a bit on caring for the rays and to look out for goiters, just dont wanna lose extra creatures if i dont need to, the porcelain normally hides and filter feeds, the snails uaually are on the glass as well and are slow moving, and the spider only comes out at night but would be as big if not bigger than the ray, so i wasnt sure

"I" would wait and get the ray in the 256. It will cause it stress to be moved. I am not going to go on anymore than that because i am sure it will be blown out of the water.

i agree with you completely on waiting for the larger tank, however, i cant say for certain that i will move it that soon, it might even be a full year before i move the ray, i just mentioned the extra tank so people would understand that i understand that the 55gal will not be big enough forever as it will outgrow it
nothing is set in stone, havent purchased anything yet, just wanted advice on the inverts(thank you by the way) since the other tank will have a porc puffer in it tomorrow thanks to SWF as long as it doesnt arrive dead again, which will also eat the inverts
currently, 3 tanks up and running, soon to be 4 as long as everything works out

The puffer may nip at the ray. I have never owned a ray, so i would also wait until some others comment. I am just saying what their basic questions are. lol What kind of ray are you looking at?

a small california/round/cortez, which is why i wanted it in the 55gal until it got a bit bigger, while it grows, i can get the 256 built
and the puffer will be in another tank as it might nip at the lion and will eat the inverts that are in there now

OK let me be the bad guy here...
You are getting a ray to live in a 55 gallon tank anywhere from several months to a year or more. You mention the larger tank just so people won't give you a hard time about the GROSSLY UNDERSIZED tank. Good luck, (you're gonna need it... at least your ray will).

To answer your question, the ray is probably not well suited to the crabs. If it can eat them, it will. If not, the crabs may injure the ray. My advice to you is to get a book and have some patience. If nothing is set in stone with the larger tank then why buy a ray now when all you have for it is a 55 gallon? Isn't that kind of like buying a horse for the stable that you don't own yet?
Man I wish sharks and rays were a LOT more expensive.

by nothing is set in stone, i meant with buying the ray, the tank materials are already paid for, even without the ray, i want the larger tank but if i do decide to hold off til the bigger tank is up, what would you recommend for a cleanup crew if he will eat everything?
i also have a 36" diamater round tank, 10" high, its about a 30gal, but much much much more swimming area and area to hide under the sand, its just not set up

LOL nice way of putting it, not a problem there
I am glad you are such a good sport, I don't really post that much just read through the threads, and let me tell you normally when someone starts a Shark/Ray thread pop some popcorn sit back and get ready for a good show, lol
it is a great form of entertainment, not mention informative, it is like if a stand up comedian did a Mutual of Omaha special lol
