Plant Fertilizer in the reef tank

I was reading about culturing phytoplankton on seahorse.org. They said that maricle grow plant fertilizer will work. But then when you feed the phyto to the tank, the fertilizer will go with it. Since they say to use it, I assume it is safe, but just want to make sure. Is it safe?

that would trigger a huge algae bloom....and fertilizer is one of the things killing natural reefs...so i would say it isn't safe
