Short tentacle plates, fungias, do quite well. As mentioned the long-tentacled plates usually don't.

x2, I've killed 3 plates. They just so hard to resist lol. Dunno what it is, just no luck with plates.
Definitely leave long tentacle plates in the sea though...

My plate is doing quite well, but I feed it 2x's weekly, and is in the upper half of the tank. Brisk water movement also. 3 x 150hqi, with 4 x 96w pc's. It even survived the tank move Dec 1, 2007.

Very interesting Anonome. Everyone always preaches putting plates in the sand. Was 9/27/07 when you first got the plate?

I had a long tentacle that lasted about 3 months and just up and died for no reason. Seems the short tentacle ones have a much higher success rate.

No, I actually got it somewhere around June/ July 2007 time frame. It has been a great coral, loves the brisk water movement. I think it is much happier now than when I first put it in the tank. Still on the rocks, but in a different location to get more movement.
I know most people do put their plates in the sand, but my diamond goby kept burying it in sand daily, so my only option was to put it on the rocks. Just find an area that is somewhat level.

i just put mine on a rock up at the top of the tank, and it looks SO much better than it has. i think as long as the rock isnt sharp and its happy enough that it wont walk away, having it on the rocks should be ok.

I had a short tentacle for about a year. Had it under T5's and it wasnt happy, so I put in on the sand bed of my 19 gallon with 150w MH's and it did much better. Then it started withering away. But it has 3 babies on the skeleton. Its back in my large tank with the T5s, up high with lots of current. The babies in the last month just developed their skeletal base. Hope they make and get alot bigger. VERY slow growing, they have barely changed in size for months! Good luck. I'm a sucker for plates too. They are neat looking coral.

Haven't figured them out myself. An orange plate that is still doing well placed in tank 1 year before Hurricane Ivan and was one of the few corals to have survived week of power outage with everyone blocked from access to tank and seen a few green plates and a purple that didn't last longer than a year in idea conditions.
