Hey guys. I did a search and couldn't really nail down an answer to my question. Here in Cali. I can't locate any southdown sand. I found some play sand that has been washed and sterilized but was wondering what should i look out for in the sand that could be harmful in my aquarium. Better yet if anyone knows an alternative to southdown available in central cali or the bay area please let me know.
Thanks.........Brian

regular play sand (quickrete) WILL NOT WORK. It needs to be aragonite sand, such as Southdown. The fact that sand has been rinsed ans sterilized is irrelevant to its composition. Better to pay the bucks and get the real stuff. there are other companies out there that sell cheap aragonite sand, but I cant list it here. A silica sand can be used for the substrate, but you might as well use CC, IMO. All it is is small pieces of glass and the particles are too large to be functional as a dsb.
