Play sand?

Ok i think i am goin to buy some play sand for my 30gal and some ls.When i get the play sand do i need to wash it out or anything like that?

not to put down the play sand but I went with it in my 20 and with as little as we truely need for our size tanks I recomend just spend the extra money and get the ls for the whole tank. You'll be much happier.

In a way I agree witht he LS suggestion. If you do however decide to go with the playsand, be careful of what you buy. You'll need to find a grain that has no pointy corners or edges, they need to be smooth. If at all possible, be cautious of buying any that is silicate based.

Playsand can and does work...even silicate based sands...but the appearence and texture leave much to be desired. I would urge you to use aragonite based sands...more money but well worth it.

If you do decide to use playsand I personally would rinse it and remove impurities. Most aragonite based sands have been properly treated and cleaned for aquarium use and I'd be concerned about stuff in common playsand.:thinking:

so should i just spend the extra money and buy 2 bags os ls or 1 bag of play sand and1 bag on ls?Which would you do?:thinking:

Below is a simple formula to use...all measurements are in inches.
length x width x desired depth of sand bed x .0579 = lbs of sand needed for desired depth

I do not recommend buying silicate based sand, nothing but problems..Spend the extra money for the good stuff. I will never go the cheaper way again.

Yup, I used aragonite based playsand (Southdown) on the bottom and covred the top with some LS from this website.
