Run it during the day if it is to loud at night.
it shouldn't have to much effect. I don't run one at all. <img src="graemlins//eek.gif" border="0" alt="[eek]" /> <img src="graemlins//urrr.gif" border="0" alt="[urrr]" /> <img src="graemlins//dead.gif" border="0" alt="[dead]" /> I love these new gremlins! <img src="graemlins//yell.gif" border="0" alt="[yell]" />

I run mine 24/7. If it's too loud, you probably could run it during the day only. What kind of skimmer are you running?

I run mine 24/7 too, but Its also loud like a churning waterfall. Ive been told it may be defective if it's too loud, but Its working right...
Anyway
I would think if you have a heavy bioload with Live rock and more than 3 or 4 fish, leave it on 24/7. If you only have a few fish and no inverts/algae/etc, just put it on a timer.

mine runs 24/7 in my sump...i had to put foam down in the sump where the water pours out bc it sounded like a waterfall...other than that the pump is pretty quiet...my overflow box makes more water noise than my skimmer...what type of skimmer are you using? and no its not imperative that the skimmer run 24/7 in fact a lot of the time if you medicate or pour chemicals in your tank you have to turn the skimmer off for the time that you are medicating...i had ick, and used kick-ick for 15 days, the whole time my skimmer was off...no problems, after the 15 days i tested the h2o and it was fine, if you have a good filter and lr or ls you can get by with turning it off for short-medium periods of time

btw loose the air pump...not sure if you read the article in the feb issue of aquarium magazine, it talks about how airpumps are pretty out dated and the ammount it actually helps in gas exchange and putting oxygen in the tank are very slim...your skimmer will help with that...plus if your trying to emulate a realistic underwater enviornment air bubbles from the bottom dont cut it...just a suggestion
