I have read that the life expectancy of most bulbs is in the 6 month range. Some will say a year, but if you bought your tank used and have had it for a year, I would definatly change the bulbs. It is expensive, but not as expensive as replacing your corals. I think you will be surprised by the way your tank looks with new bulbs, and your corals are more sensitive to the light than your eyes are!
Good luck and I hope this has helped!

depending on what type of lighting you use & brand of the bulbs, you should change your lights 6-1 year, yes

About 9 months to a year on power compacts if they are on an electronic ballast. Every 6 to 9 months on magnetic ballasts. Not a rule but generally speaking.

You didn't mention what kind of corals you have. I take it they are mostly soft corals, as it would be more difficult to be successful for a full year on that light if they were hard corals. My point is that your light intensity may need to be evaluated here as well (corals can slowly degrade over a period of several months due to not enough light intensity). Could you give us a run-down on your corals so we can better help?

I was recommended (from this forum) a good book called The Conscientious Marine Aquarist. The book recommends replacing your bulbs every 9-12 months, but do NOT replace them all at once(it may shock your inhabitants). Hope this helps!
