KENT Marine Reef Carbon Product Advisory
Feb 22, 2012
RE: KENT Marine Reef Carbon Product Advisory
There is a quality concern with KENT Marine Reef Carbon manufactured between December 5th of 2011 and February 8th of 2012. The concern is that the batch of carbon contained unusually high levels of heavy metals which have an adverse effect on stony corals and clams in marine settings. KENT Marine Reef Carbon is a virgin coal based carbon that is mined giving it greater adsorption properties. Unfortunately during this mining process, small layers containing heavy metals like copper were introduced into the carbon. This contamination of heavy metals would likely go undetected in freshwater environments and would not affect livestock. However in marine (salt water) aquariums, the effects can be seen in as quickly as a couple of hours to stony corals and clams. Fish and higher invertebrates such as shrimp do not seem to be affected. After removal of the contaminated carbon and dilution by a water change or use of other filtration means, most corals have been able to recover in 2-3 weeks from the exposure.
This carbon is also mainly used for commercial potable and wastewater treatment such as municipal water supplies. These are single pass systems where the water will only pass through the carbon bed once and any residual leaching of metal into the water will be minimal. This is also why carbon is not typically tested for heavy metals; until now. When carbon is used in aquarium settings, the water passes through the carbon bed multiple times increasing the soluble metal in that enclosed environment.
If you have purchased KENT Marine Reef Carbon in the last three months, please refer to the below table to identify the product size you may have purchased and the expiration dates affected.

If you have product with an above expiration date, please discontinue use and perform a standard water change. Take the remaining product back to the retailer where it was purchased for a refund or exchange or call a Central Aquatics customer service representative at 1-888-255-4527.
We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused as we want to assure you that we intend to deliver the highest quality products possible. With this development, the quality of KENT Reef Carbon will be produced under new testing protocols.
Again we sincerely apologize for having to bring this quality concern to your attention. If you have any questions about this advisory or any other KENT Marine product, please contact a Central Aquatics customer service representative at 1-888-255-4527.

So if this was a couple of months ago why are they still on the shelves? I bought this 2 weeks ago at my LFS.

Just got off the phone with Kent Marine they said to return it to the store for exchange. Otherwise I have to pay to mail them the container back to them with the receipt (which I threw out). This is no deal I guess I'm out the $15 bucks on bad product if the LFS won't exchange it. I'll find this out tomorrow. I'm glad they only had the 1lb containers on the shelf.

That sucks if as snake said this was brought to the members attention a few months ago perhaps we need an area on the boards where recalls are posted

Agreed!
My timeline has been off for a month since my daughter has been born. I've been tired, but if I remember correctly, it was about a month ago when this was mentioned.
I third the motion to have a "recalls" section or a "product awareness" section of the site.

Good news store took product back no question asked, good to be LFS club member. But they didn't know there was a recall, shouldn't manufactures tell there distributors? Tried to use up my credit right then and there but they didn't have any selcon, that darn Lymphocystis is hanging around on the Pakistani butterfly.

I was the one who posted this recall originally. My LFS was using it in their SPS tanks and lost all their ORA SPS, it was really sad. A lot of stores, at least in my area, were not taking the product back and offering a refund because apparently Kent is making it really difficult for the retailers to then get their money back. There's also been people stating that other batches of the carbon that Kent is not admitting to also had the same effect.

When I talked to Kent manufacturing they said that they are test all carbon for the heavy metals now and that any product with exp date after FEB 2015 has been tested. I wonder if we should believe them?

Personally, the only products they make that I trust at all are the TechM and the Tank Clarifier (which was originally made by a different company and they bought it). I'm not really a fan of Kent or Brightwell products. If the TechM wasn't the only one on the market that worked against bryopsis, I'd probably never buy their products at all. People were complaining for months to them about the carbon issue and Kent played dumb and basically told the hobbyists they didn't know what they were doing. This even happened to the LFS that I saw loose tons of corals and clams as a result. When they had it happen to a second tank, they called Kent and emailed them, and Kent basically told them "too bad".

Thanks, BTLDreef, sorry I was away from my comp. this weekend. The only reason I like kent was because of the size of the carbon, its larger than the others. I have a carbon holder for my skimmer and it works with out a mesh bag. But I guess I'm going to be using the bag from now on. Do you have a preferred brand I use to think carbon was carbon, but not any more?

I've tried a few different brands throughout and years and on different tanks and I always end up going back to Chemi Pure.

TommieLynn I am glad I brought the subject up again. Can the boards institute a recall section on the site
Spoke to Admin. Mary thinks it's a great idea and they're waiting to hear back from the I.T. person to start a new forum for recalls.

Well, it's not getting it's own forum, but here's the thread where Recalls should be posted:
