I just saw a huge ( 2 inch ) shimp crawl out of my LR and snanch something, then it went back into its hole. I cant find it now, but it was probably a shimp, very fast moving, and VERY VERY ugly. It was pitch black. What is this???!!! I want it out of my tank, It doesnt look good. Will it eat the feather duster or starfish i bought today? Should I rush to the LFS before it closes and get a trap before night? Thanks

they will eat anything that seems to be an opportunity, if it is, i just answered a very similar question for drew_tt, it should be down one or 2 links, read it, but as mentioned, you need to find out what it was for sure, before jumping the gun, all signs do seem ike it could be one, but make sure first, the trap i described to him does sometimes work(but hen again so d the lfs traps, sometimes)

using a red flashlight, may help you sto spot it in the dark, because red light does not project a beam, and these guys are as shy as they are scarey

If you don't get him out, he will probably eat your coral banded anyway. Removal of the rock is the best idea.
P.S. Don't stick you fingure in there or he'll eat that too!!!!!!!

I dont think its Mantis Shrimp. The clicking was from my CB eating my dead hermit. :( But, I think it was realated. It looks like this- not good.

Ilovetoride,
That is exactly what mine looks like. Mine is about a 1/4 of an inch big. What are some good traps to get this little crap out. Man, I wish I had not bought live sand now. :(

actually it is the rock, that probably brought him, but that does not outweigh teh benefits of lr at all, the mantis can be gottten rid of
use a coke bottle, cut the top off,a nd invert the top, and super glue it back in, put bait inside, and cut slits in the sside and put it in front of his hole, maybe you will get lucky, it would be better to add the trap in the dark,a nd leave it in
good luck

I read an article in AFM a couple of months ago about how to fish one of these babies out. I'm sorry I don't have the reference. You put bait (what i don't know) on a string and dangle it in front of his hole. The Mantis grabs hold, and you pull him out. He is mean enough not to let go. I guess then you call your local taxidermist and have him stuffed for you.

that is neat, i read somewher that somebody did that, called the taxidermist and have them over he tank, nice trophies, huh?

what bait do I use ?
Is it possible for him to live in the sand and not a rock?
The reason I say all of this is because all the live rock I have bought has been transported to my house with out water in it. When I buy some they take the live rock out run ro/di water on it and then wrap it in a paper towel that also has ro/di water on it. So the rock is out of water for about 30 minutes until I can add it to my tank.

Also, are these critters common problems. Alot of people are saying they have them now. Thank goodness for this message board or I would never have known what these things are.
