Plenum Only?

My LPS owner has a reef system set up, which has been up and running in his store for a several years. It operates on the plenum only along with chiller/header, and appropriate lighting. No wet/dry, no canisters, protein skimmers, powerheads, etc. He use to have these other things on it, but since installing the plenum, he hasn't used the rest [this setup still has the ug filter underneath even though its not in use]. He says its virturally maintenace free, and its certainly the easiest tank to take care of in his store. No reason for him to exaggerate his claim, as the plenum is basically self-made! [Thus, he won't be selling me anything to set it up].
Anyone out there have an opinion on this? Sounds too good to be true!

I DON'T HAVE A REEF TANK, BUT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN TOLD THAT YOU MUST HAVE WATER MOVEMENT TO KEEP THE CORAL FROM DIEING IN IT'S OWN WASTE. HOW IS THIS PROBLEM ADDRESSED?
