Interesting question. I have had a SPS dominated tank for about a year now and I have only lost one colony (wild caught) and when it rtn'd on me it didn't harm anything else. The thing about SPS corals is that they don't really have much to them, skin and skeleton so when you do lose one it's not likely to pollute the tank. I could be wrong here but this is my guess. Corals like LPS, leathers and zoa's have A LOT more flesh to them that can contaminate the water.

i agree. sps dont really contaminate the water as much as softies or zoas. from the book i'd read, softies r the only one that releases toxins. lps depends more on stings. i'd think if a coral dies, softies would so the most contamination.

Difficult question. Good water quality is essential along with good lighting and flow but it really depends on the coral. Placement is huge and making sure that it is healthy to begin with.
As for the dead coral you can take it out and bleach it and it would look nice on a shelf I guess. Or you can cut it up and use it to secure frags.

I would never throw away or bleach an SPS skeleton, as they can receed down into their skeleton for extended periods to come back to life later.

This I would like to see...
What I'd do with the skeletons is frag other pieces and have them encrust the it...especially monti's.

Interesting picture! Are there any other corals near the tank that could have seeded it? I have had this happen in my tank when little pieces have broken off colonies and set up shop in other areas of the tank.
