Poll: Sump or No Sump?

I'm trying to decide what the best way to go is. If you guys could also offer input for your decision I would appreciate it.

I'm a big fan of sumps and refugiums, especially if you enjoy DIY projects, or at least don't mind fiddling with the plumbing parts.
If you aren't handy, or don't want to mess with it - I suppose a hang on fuge is better than no fuge.
With a sump/fuge combo though, it gives you a lot of flexbility.

I agree with broomer. I like the under tank fuge/sumps, they give you more water volume as well as more room for equipment in the sump and more filtration in a fuge. As far as the HOB's, I think they are a good idea, however there isn't much room for anything on the back of the tank after it is added, and there's not much room in the fuge for macros. The good part about a HOB would be the pod culturing capabilities without the DIY projects.

Well then I'd say no to a sump/refugium and go with a HOB style one unless your tank was drilled. I think part of the challenge/fun/desire for doing a nano is being self contained.
If the tank is drilled then it is easy to accomplish a refugium underneath and pump it back up - but with a suction style overflow it might be too much hassle.
Either way the more volume you have the more stable so if you are not going to be anal retentive about monitoring the tank then go with a sump and refugium ....

given the size I might do an above tank refugium. Still trying to work out that part though. I hope I'll have a digi camera for pics to post about it if I do make one, I've yet to recieve a response in the DIY section about one so it might be a good post.

Good idea - several people around here have above tank refugiums

yeah, since I am talking nano tank (20 and under is what i'm trying to plan right not) I'm starting to think a sump would be more or less useless (for my purposes) except for added water stability whereas I could just put more $$ into the refugium make it bigger and it will serve a similar purpose.
