Hey all. Please state your opinion - for beginning saltys is a 29 gallon setup okay or is a 55 better? Please vote and tell me why
you have chosen whatever you did! Thanks, I am a newbie trying to decide whether to go ahead with my 29 or to just get a 55!
Thanks,

I chose my 30 gallon tank because my 60 gallon is set up with freshwater (and the 30 was empty). I am going to see how the 30 gallon goes before converting the 60 gallon.

Without voting, I can almost certainly tell you that everyone is going to vote for the bigger tank. If you can spare the extra room and money, get a 75. It gives a new hobbyist more room for error.

Yes, its easier to maintain a larger tank. It is tottaly up to you though. If you want to keep a dwarf angel go for the 55. I think with a 55 you could just get a bigger variety of fish. Some people think smaller tanks are impossible to newer hobbyests but thats just not true. It is deffinatley possible if you give it a little extra care and attention.

Besides being more "stable" because of a larger water volume, the 55 will give you more options in fish selection...
While many will give you a hard time for putting a Tang in a 55, it's definetly a no-no in the 29.
It always seems like we want just "one more fish" and the 29 will be a limiting factor in population. Go bigger...

I vote for a 75. It doesn't take up any more room than a 55 but is 18 inches wide instead of 13 inches wide. If you get a smaller tank you will loose money in the long run because you won't be able to keep what you want in there and will be buying a bigger tank in 6 months or a year anyway. I would first research the fish that you want and see what the minimum tank size is for the fish before you make up your mind. In saltwater you can only keep about half as many fish or less as compared to fresh water. About one inch of fish for every 3 to 4 gallons of tank capacity. In a thirty gallon tank one can only keep three to four small fish. Lesley

definitely, 55 or 75 not 29. You will want to put a lot of fish in the tank when starting out.. 29 gal is not enough.....
I started out 55 but I wish I took my time to do research and started out with 75 instead... go bigger.....

Dear Posters,
Thanks to all who have responded. Your various opinions and reasonings have helped me steer clear of what might have been a very unsatisfying outcome with my tank. You are all a credit to the Hobby as you have done well to first off ensure that defenseless creatures were not crammed into a too-small area due to my trying to "get what I liked" instead of what will fit and secondly the tips offered will result in both me AND my future pets being being healthy and happier with the set up I go with. I AM definately going to get as large of a tank as my floor structure will allow (but not a 210 gallon!) because I do want to have a Regal Tang for sure. Thanks again for all who offered not only their "vote" but also their reasonings.
