polyp propping ??

I have a rock covered in brown star polyps. these polyps grow on a mat that spreads like a jelly and then the polpys grow out of this mat. This mat has doubled in size since I bought it and is spreading to rockas all over the surrounding area.
Can I just slice this mat where the original rock meets the new rock next to it, in order to move the polyps to a different part of the tank and have them grow over there??

yeah you can just take a exacto knife and slice inbetween the polyps on the mat and then move the rock away.
