My father-in-law has a freshwater pond (about 1500 gal); he was telling me that he can barely see his fish due to green algae. I was reading about green algae and for what I understood an UV Sterilizer would do the trick. Is my assumption correct? I know jack about ponds…. so any advice will be great!
How about wattage?? How long should I let it run...etc.

Yes a UV sterilizer would work. For a pond that size I don't know what watt. In my pond which is only 150 gallons I put the sprinkler on it and the tap water water keeps the alage at bay. I know the chlorine is not really good but I figure the small amount that is getting in and how it actually affect fish I thought it would be okay.
My brother in law uses this stuff from Lowes for his that tint the water blue to cut down on the sun from causeing the algae. Youcan also use an algae control but those are usually un safe for pets so I wont use one. You could also get a cleaning crew for the pond like algae suckers and snails and so on.

Having had a huge 15000 Lilly-koi, goldfish pond for many, many years. My advice would be to contact AZ ponds at their website .

For a 1500 gallon pond about 20-25 watt unit will do...... Just stay away from the cheap UV units. You get what you pay for. Warren

Tks Vinny and Warren!! I'm planning to do a good clean up....and buy a good quality UV Sterilizer. I'm taking a couple days off to visit my in-laws....so this will keep me busy....

15 or 25wt Aqua Ultraviolet sterilizer with wiper. The wiper allows you to clean the quartz tube without having to shut down unit and take apart to clean the quartz tube. They are some of the best units in the biz, so I wouldn't worry about that. I think you asked about how long to run, you don't have to run it 24/7, you can if you want. Most people do. Run it as long as you have green water, when it clears up you can cut it back if you want. If it starts to come back turn it back on. It is kind of seasonal in my area so usually once you get rid of it in late spring,early summer it's gone for the season.

Yes make sure you get one with a wiper. They are a pain to take apart to clean on some models... Forgot that tip for him thanks.......
