Pony Tank Set Up~Bubbles02

Hi Bubbles02,
I would leave the firefish and the candycane goby in the Eclipse 12. Seahorses, especially ponies, need a species only tank. Due to a aiptasia disaster I boiled and bleached everything in the pony tank. From that point on I've set up my pony tanks with DS and DR that I add cultured pods to insure no hitch hikers get into the pony tank.
Q: How is the flow with the eclipse, will it be too strong for them?
A: The Eclipse set I started was okay. You must

cover all intake flows. But after awhile I realized that the Eclipse flow was not strong enough and I found a lot of potentially dangerous dead spots.
Q: Should I just get maybe a standard 2.5g and get a Stingray filter?
A: I'd start with a standard 10g. After you get use to the flow they need and find a combination of tank landscape set up...then I'd start trying different sized tanks.
Q:Also, do you sell any of your babies?
A:I was going to until I have a complete tank crash

Q:Or know a good place to get them?
A: I do and can PM you that info.
I'll be happy to help you with the set up and any questions you have

sooo...I think i've decided to give up on my Nano tank I had going. I've had 2 fish in it for a week to the day and so far the 2 that i originally bought have both died. I got a replacement to the one that died under warranty yesterday and now this morning the other original died. The tank has been set up since oh i dunno probably before Oct of last year. So there is really no reason I should be having cycle issues or antyhing. I've had my water tested twice before I put these new fish in it. Now I'm back down to one fish(the replacement) and he is just hanging out against a rock. We'll see if he last 3 days like the last one!
Anyway, sorry for my vent. I'm thinking of tearing it down and just setting up my Eclipse 3 gallon for my ponies. I'm assuming you guys wouldn't advise using some water from my 12g Eclipse? Since i'm having bad luck with it. I think the goby died of ich(which all of a sudden came up in a day and a half).

eeeeeeeeeeeeeek...ick...bleach it all....if you're going to use it for the pony tank. And definately DO NOT use anything from the 12g.

Hey Rykna,
Do you have an acutal pic of your hatchery by chance?
This is a drawing of it:

I can put my hatchery together and post a pic of it in a few days.

What are the ponies average life span? Also, I haven't really seen anything about the kind of lighting the need. Do they need specific lights?
Thanks for putting your hatchery together to get a picture!

You're very welcome.
My "stallion", Titan, was 4 years old, very healthy, and chasing females night and day, until the tank crash. When given a healthy environment, plenty of food, they can live up to 7 years from what I've read.
Ponies don't need any special lighting, especially if you keep the tank "sterile". Just your basic viewing light.
I hope to have the hatchery pic for you on monday or tuesday

Thanks for all the adivce Rykna! You've been a big help.
One other thing. I have a heater in my nano, but it's unplugged because the tank tends to stay around 81. I used to keep my house at about 84 when I'm not home because power is so expensive, but now that i have fish, i can't be that high. I keep it about 79-80 in my house cause again, of the power. but my tank still sits at around 81-82 sometimes, is there anyway i can try to get the temp down? Shouldn't it be around what the temp in my house is when there is no heater? Is this going to be too warm for the ponies?

Gosh! That's a tough one....living in Minnesota I've never had to deal with that.

If your tank is 76-80 the gestation averages 10 to 14 days.If you keep your tank from 72-74 the gestation period can almost double.
A higher water temperatures increase the constant egg development. Which means feeding more too.
I have never used a chiller, but that would be my choice. I have heard many people being successful by using a small fan that you can clip or mount on the tank...but I haven't tried that either.
If it were me. I'd set up the tank and keep track of the temp for 3-4 days. How much does it fluctuate? A drop in temp of 3 or more degrees will cause major problems: salinity rises, oxygen levels drop, and the PH gets thrown off too.
I would guess the temp in Florida goes up do to humidity. You might try a dehumidifier to see if that would if that would help~I found this info online:
"Warm air is less dense and able to hold more moisture. Cool air is denser and unable to hold as much moisture. So lowering the temperature reduces relative humidity."
So by using a dehumidifier it may help reduce the temp in your house

When are planning to get your ponies?

Well, I live in Las Vegas, NV and let me tell you, it's a desert out here!! lol It's sooo hot, gonna be about 110 today. I cooled my house to 76 last night and the tank was about 80, so it dropped about 2 degrees give or take. Will the ponies get used to being in 81 degree water? Or is that going to be too hot. I could try the fan and see if that helps.

Well all the info I have says 72-77, so pushing the temp to 81 is not an option IMHO. I have a little free standing AC unit, it occurred to me that you could purchase a free standing AC unit for the pony room. This should allow you to leave the main house AC set a energy saving levels, and then set the little unit at a auto temp of 72.

This unit was $90......or I suppose...you could move to Minnesota
jk.....let me know what you think
