I have a new hippo (for about a week now) in a 55 gal tank (with a high efficiency prism skimmer, rio 800 aqua pump for aeration, ecoo cannister filter) with a tang, clown, and 2 damsels. I think he has "pop-eye" but I'm not sure. I've never seen a case of it before. The circular area around one of his eyes is protruding but the actual small area (maybe the cornea) of the eye looks fine it's just the circular area surrounding the cornea that looks like an bubble. Also, on the same side the along the side of his head in the gill area also looks distended and discolored.
Yesterday we started treating him in a Maracyn bath (2 hours in a separate tank with super high levels of maracyn and then 5 hours back in the regular tank) as instructed by the fish store but it doesn't seem to be any better yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I feel like we're killing him. Thanks!!

HI DL...
YOUR WELCOME....IT SOUNDS LIKE POP-EYE TO ME....
TREATING IT WITH MARACYN 2 SHOULD CLEAR UP HIS EYE....
BASICALLY, YOU HAVE TO DOUBLE THE DOSAGE FOR THE
ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE TREATMENT PLAN WHAT THE PACKAGE SAYS...MAKE SURE ITS MARACYN 2 AND NOT JUST MARACYN...YOU SHOULD DO THE TREATMENT IN A QT/HT CAUSE THE MEDS WILL KILL YOUR LS AND INVERTS IF YOU HAVE ANY....
ALSO, HE SHOULD REMAIN IN THE HT FOR THE ENTIRE TREATMENT PERIOD....

HI....
KEEP THE TANK SIMPLE...10-20 GAL...DEPENDING ON THE SIZE OF THE FISH THAT WILL BE QT IN THERE...BIO-WHEEL FILTRATION AND A PIECE OF DECORATIVE ROCK OR PVC PIPE FOR THE FISH TO HIDE IN...A LIGHT IS GOOD ALSO ....

My Blue Hippo had Pop Eye, so i went to my local vet and they gave me some tetracycline, the little bag was way more then i needed because it was used for live stock like chickens and stuff, but i guessed the dosage and mixed some up with my fishes food let it soak and fed them, i first starved them for 24 hours so they would be really hungry, then i fed them and after about 2 days the pop eye was gone. My LFS yelled at me for useing the tetracycline saying it would kill the good bacteria in my tank but that never happened, i think they just wanted me to buy there stuff for twice as much and have it not work. Anyway it worked great and havent had a problem since.

Thanks for the reply. I'll keep it in mind. Do you know much about pop eye? He's had it for a few days now and the antibiotics we're using don't seem to help much. We haven't been able to contact our fish store due to the holidays. Any info anyone can give me would really help. Thanks.

HI....
SOMETIMES POP-EYE IS DUE TO A BACTERIAL INFECTION OR
AN INJURY....EITHER WAY IT IS TREATABLE BY ANTIBIOTICS...
THE SOONER YOU GET HIM INTO A HT FOR TREATMENT THE BETTER OFF HE WILL BE....HE CAN HOWEVER POSSIBLY LOSE THE EYESITE IN THAT EYE EVENTUALLY IF NOT TREATED....
TREAT HIM AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS THIS IS RECOMMENDED FOR A FAST RECOVERY...DOUBLE THE TREATMENT DOSAGE THAT IS
RECOMMENDED ON THE PACKAGE...

Thanks again. I couldn't get in maracyn 2 today - all the fish stores were closed and the regular pet shops that were open didn't have any. So, hopefully tomorrow will be quick enough. He doesn't look very good with the pop eye and the other distension on the side of his head. That's why I'm so worried. Also, he's not eating. The last time he ate was Saturday. Is that normal? Thanks.

HI DL....
TERRY AND BETH ARE THE EXPERTS ON THIS BOARD....LISTEN TO
WHAT THEY TELL YOU TO DO ....THEY ARE VERY KNOWLEGEABLE....
I BELEIVE WHAT TERRY IS TELLING YOU REGARDING AGED AERATED WATER MEANS WATER THAT YOU WOULD USE FOR TOP-OFFS THAT HAS BEEN SITTING FOR A FEW DAYS WITH EITHER AN AIRSTONE OR POWERHEAD FOR MOVEMENT....
TRY TO GET THE M2 TODAY AS IT CANNOT HURT TO TREAT HIM
ANYWAY IF IT IS A BACTERIAL ISSUE...BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY...

Thanks but I still need to know what is considered a "large" water change? 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 percent? And, what does this do/how does it work. Thanks!

HI DL...
LISTEN....PUT THE FISH IN A HT AND TREAT HIM WITH THE M2....
IN THE MEAN TIME YOU CAN DO A WATER CHANGE IN THE MAIN
TANK....THE HIPPO WILL BE IN THE HT FOR AWHILE SO I
WOULDNT WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT DOING A WATER CHANGE RIGHT NOW....JUST MY OPINION....
WHAT SIZE MAIN TANK DO YOU HAVE?
REGARDS...
