Porcupine Puffer & a Chocolate Star

I would like to put a Chocolate Chip Star in a 45 gallon tank with a Porcupine Puffer. The only other fish in this tank is a 4 stripe Damsel. The Puffer is approx 8" long and only eats freeze dried krill. Has anyone tried this before?

Get rid of the puffer since it's TOO BIG for that tank. Then the star will have no enemies.

Welcome to the SWF Boards...Couple things, an 8 inch Porky Puffer is a really large fish for a tank that small, I would not have anything else with him, the bioload from such a big eater is a ton....that Damsel is likely to become lunch very soon. Dried krill was the only thing my porky would eat at first, but you have to train him to eat other foods, try frozen shrimp, silversides, clams, squid etc. As far as the starfish, not really a major food source for puffers, but if he thinks its food, he will eat it....

kjr trig,
thanks. I know he's big, he lived in a 10 gallon for a very long time. i've been throwing around the idea of moving my reef into the 45 and Blout into the 55, but then I have a problem of what to do with the 18" Snowflake eel I have in the reef tank. I already have 7 tanks in the house, can't get another.

Puffy and Snowflake would make fine tank mates, the bigger the tank the better, and lots of protein skimming and water changes for them, they are big eaters that create a lot of waste....Do get Puffy off the dried krill only diet, I was told this can lead to big problems like blindness and lockjaw.

KJR TRIG,
Thanks!! I will do my best to get him to eat something else. I have silversides that I've been cutting up and trying to feed him, but he just swims in the opposite directions. Maybe a day or two of no krill will help. I hate the thought of ripping apart the reef tank, that is such a chore!

I assume that these two are the only SW tanks? He will outgrow the 55 as well. This is not a fish that stops growing due to tank size. I would not put him into a reef. He will eat your corals and whatever else seems tasty. Don't get the star. He is likely to chomp on him.

Use frozen krill at first. Then add other foods in with that.
