i have kept freshwater fish for many years. I am just now making the jump in to saltwater. The last serious fish I kept were to freshwater rays. His disk it about 12+" and she was 7” These fish were the most beautiful things I ever kept. They would just dance. So here is mine, let’s see yours.

Beautiful rays. I had a bluespot, but it died a couple of months ago. I'm not doing another ray set up till I move in Aug. What kind of FW rays are those? What kind of care do you provide for FW rays that is different from SW rays?

I Thanks for all of those pics of your rays AC, what kind are those? Do sw rays have the same poisonous spines and fresh water rays? I see you petting that one. My male was almost 20" in total length; his spines were about 3" long. I have read that a sting from a freshwater ray often kills the natives in the Amazon. I am drawing a blank on the name, it will come to me. Care was weekly water changes and cleaning all of the filter media. The big on would suck up large night crawlers like spaghetti 3 or 4 per feeding twice per day.

They are yellow sting rays also called yellow spots. They do have their barb, but haven't raised it in a menising manner. I call them my wet dogs. They love to interact with me that's one reason I'm hooked on them. Don't get me wrong I'm very careful when I do pet them. My worst nightmare is to end up in a Denver emergency room trying to explain to them I was stung by a sting ray.

There have been several question about the FW rays. Yes they are completely freshwater or not brackish. I did however add a little salt each time I did a water change, about a 1/4 cup to 20 gallons. Yes they were both killed, both by 2 separate fish. With these fish all it takes is one bite on the disk. The infection from the bite can kill them in 24 hours. If I ever keep rays again it would be rays only tank.

another thing is the cost. not that it was a money thing when I lost them. the big guy was worth about $400-$450 when he was killed.

Did you have the poisonous variety of rays you mentioned, or a different variety?
I saw rays like yours at a store in Park Ridge, IL for $900 a piece...they were about 8 inches diameter.
How long did you have them before they succumbed to infection? My blue spot only lasted a year:(
I don't want another blue spot, but have considered FW rays in the past--how hardy are they?

I would not recomend FW rays with any large agressive fish.
Polarpooch, I am that the rays you saw were the black spotted rays. they look similar, were they all black with white dots? $900 is about the right price range for those ones. My rays were the Moto rays not as rare and a little more hardy. I had my rays for a year, the male that is. the female only lasted about 5 months, she never really adapted well. I think because another fish was picking on her. The male was doing great, he would have lasted for a long time but, my 2 ft Arowana took a big bite out of him. FW rays are also not legal in Cali so they are very hard to find. My male was 12-13"

I'm sure the rays I saw were like yours...the Park Ridge store was the highest priced store I've ever seen--but it supposedly caters to the likes of Michael Jordan, et al. Unfortunately, it's the only place I've ever found FW rays of ANY kind. The rays were in a giant tank with maybe a dozen fair sized Arrowanas swimming about as well.
I have seen the black and white variety, but only at the Shedd Aquarium (great reef exhibit there now for those of you in the Chicago area, BTW)...but that variety gets far too large for a set up my size, though.
I have a 180g that was set up for my blue spot...I've since dismantled and stored it since she died and I'm gearing up for a move. I have been toying with the idea of a FW set up--preferably rays if I can find them. Just picking your brain, since I have zero experience with FW, beyond a betta at my office!
I may do another SW ray tank--yellows maybe, not blue spots, but am investigating other ideas before I decide.
