Posting pics bigger than 500x500

Is it possible to post pics larger than 500 x 500? I set the resolution size down as small as it can go on my camera before taking pics yesterday. Uploaded them to photobucket then shrunk them down so they wouldn't be larger than 500 but then the pics look so small, it's hard to see the rock work, etc. I see larger sized pics on here. How do you do that?
Also, do I have to use the insert image function or can i just post the url link or html tag from photobucket directly? THANKS!

I use photobucket,I copy the IMG code and the pictures stays the same 1024x768.I don't understand why it wouldn't do the same for you.

the OP is trying to use the attach images on the bottom.
when using photobucket, you really should edit down the pic to the website size so people don't have to scroll right to see the whole pic.

I agree--it's a pain in the posterior to have to scroll across to read a post!

I agree, very RUDE of the poster of the large pic. to do that only for his/her pleasure as it screws everything up in that whole thread.

I agree with above. I sometimes link to hosting site pics but I crop or resize them first to around 700 or 800 X whatever. I consider the above pic way to large ( but I have seen worse ) and when I see the bottom scoll bar pop up in a thread I often just click ' back ' and leave the thread. I consider it being disrepectfull to the site to make members scroll sideways to read a post or veiw a pic.
Im not sure if the site or Mods can do anything about it or if they want to but, I wish they would.

With all do respect resizing my photos to 500x500 just distort the image but I will resize them to 640x480.I don't have to scroll over to see a pick of that size.Am I missing something here?

Everytime I open a thread with extended bar,
I got lazy and just read whatever on the screen, anything's off the screen and required dragging the bar over, I just ignore it and make a good guess what he/she's trying to say.

If the width is resized to 499 and then "tab" is hit; it will resize length on it's own and be portion perfect. No distortion.
